Whangārei District Council’s organisational strategy has been awarded the Capability Group Award for Excellence in Organisation and People Development as part of the 2021 LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards, presented at a Gala Dinner in Wellington tonight.

The project is a ground-up development to build a more inclusive, cohesive and effective organisation, and is innovative in that it has been driven by second and third tier managers from across the organisation.

The judges said that Whangārei had succeeded in embedding the strategy into its day-to-day operations and generated buy-in at a managerial level. Cross-departmental whānau groups are still in place ensuring the longevity of the strategy.

Taituarā Chief Executive, Karen Thomas, congratulated Whangārei District Council and said that this year’s Gala Dinner was extra special after last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

“The last year was challenging for the local government sector, and there are plenty of challenges ahead.

“It was wonderful to gather to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible mahi in the sector.

“Congratulations to Whangārei on their approach to building an exceptional organisational culture. And thank you to Capability Group for their support.”

Seven category winners of the 2021 LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards, plus a Supreme Award were announced, along with an award for an emerging leader, overseas manager exchanges, and a leadership scholarship. Also announced was the winning team of the New Zealand leg of the Australasian Management Challenge.
