New Zealanders need more shade in the places they live, learn, work and play. The cause of over 90 per cent of skin cancers is overexposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Councils play a crucial role in looking after the wellbeing of our communities by providing shade in our outdoor play and recreation areas.

The Cancer Society is sharing a range of resources as well as research aimed at councils. This includes advice on providing shaded areas for your community, planning a SunSmart workplace policy to protect your council employees, and adopting a SunSmart policy for council-managed early childhood services.
