Tasman District and Nelson City Councils led the way in 2022 as the first councils in the country to adopt a joint Future Development Strategy under the National Policy Statement on Urban Development. We worked together on this high-level growth strategy for the regions, reflecting the closely integrated urban environment. The Joint Committee of the Councils accepted a balanced set of recommendations for the FDS which support the demand for housing in a competitive market, the need to protect productive land and manage the environment sustainably as well as addressing our communities' growth needs. Our communities will benefit from a strategy that safely enables growth but also enables future generations to continue to enjoy this special location.

There was significant interest in the strategy with over 550 submissions received. The FDS considered many spatial scenarios and assessed over 200 sites using a multi-criteria analysis framework. The FDS is informed by objectives which endeavour to reflect iwi and hap aspirations, community values, housing and business needs and national policy direction. The FDS outlines a strategy of consolidated growth focused largely along State Highway 6, maximising intensification opportunities but also including Māpua and Motueka and meeting the needs of Tasman's rural towns.
