Emma is a local government leader who sees her experience living with bipolar II as a strategic advantage, not a secret to hide.
She brings her lived experience to the leadership table — using it to foster empathy, creativity, and courage in her work.
Her career proves that high performance and mental wellbeing are not opposed. Emma challenges outdated assumptions about leadership and mental health, sparks open conversations, and encourages others with lived experience to lead.
With more than 12 years in education and local government, she has managed libraries in Buller, Gore, and now Central Otago, leading a team of 20+ across four libraries.
She led the move to a fines-free model at Gore Libraries and founded CommuniTea, a pop-up café that reduced loneliness and built connection — earning her a West Coast Regional Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Award in 2019.
Emma believes real change happens through everyday actions — by challenging outdated thinking, being open about her experiences, and modelling that strong, successful leaders can live well with a mental health condition.
