Taituarā is proud to announce the launch of a new overseas exchange opportunity for 2026: the Hononga Indigenous Overseas Manager Exchange.

This Exchange has been created to support and celebrate tangata whenua Māori working in local government, offering a unique opportunity to connect, learn and share experiences with First Nations local government leaders in Victoria, Australia.

Sponsored by Hononga Consulting, led by Scott Summerfield and Lisa Hopa, the Hononga Exchange recognises the vital role indigenous leadership and partnerships play in local government decision-making and community outcomes.

Scott introduces the opportunity in the short video below:

What’s involved?

The Hononga Indigenous Overseas Manager Exchange involves a short, hosted visit to Victoria, Australia, followed by the reciprocal hosting of an Australian First Nations local government professional during the annual Taituarā Conference.

Participants will have the chance to:

  • build meaningful relationships with indigenous leaders across the Tasman
  • share knowledge, experiences and perspectives
  • deepen understanding of how indigenous voices are reflected in local government systems and practice

This Exchange provides space for reflection, learning and connection, while celebrating the leadership and contribution of Māori professionals working in local government.

You are encouraged to apply if you:

  • identify as Māori
  • work in local government in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • hold a management role (people leadership, project leadership, or similar)
  • are a Taituarā member (Pathfinder or Navigator).
You can apply for membership at the same time as submitting your exchange application.

Overseas Manager Exchange opportunities

The Hononga Indigenous Overseas Manager Exchange is one of five international exchange opportunities available through Taituarā in 2026, alongside exchanges to the United States, Australia, and Canada.

Each Exchange offers a chance to grow leadership capability, build international connections and bring new insights back to local government in Aotearoa.

Applications for all exchanges close at midday Friday 13 March. Successful applicants will be announced at the LGFA Taituarā Excellence Awards, held at Tākina, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington on 18 June 2026.
