About the 2021 Emerging Leader of the Year Award

The 2021 Emerging Leader of the Year Award will be presented to an emerging leader, aged 35 or under, who has a proven track record of designing or delivering innovative and successful programmes, projects, processes or practices with an identifiable community impact.

The recipient will travel to Oregon, United States, to attend the 2021 ICMA Conference (ongoing travel restrictions due to Covid-19 may necessitate in a change to this destination). Emerging Leader of the Year applicants will be invited to Wellington on 6 May to participate in an exclusive professional development opportunity.

The Emerging Leader of the Year Award is offered as an important aspect of Taituarā’s strategy to support increased leadership capability in the sector. The Award is part of Taituarā’s LGLeadership Pathway’s initiative which includes a range of programmes and activities that provide staff across the sector with outstanding leadership development opportunities.

The winner of the 2020 Award - Kane McElrea, Biosecurity Manager, Northland Regional Council. The judges were impressed with the impact of Kane's leadership in his region as well as nationally through his work and connection networks.
