A record field of eight will contest this year’s GHD Award for Excellence in Environmental Leadership.
The Environmental Leadership category recognises programmes, projects, or initiatives that provide tangible benefits to the environment, or showcase leading practice in managing environmental impacts in the local community.
“There isn’t a consistent theme to the entries this year” Taituarā Chief Advisor Raymond Horan says. The eight entries this year are a mix of three infrastructure projects, two restoration works, conservation education, predator control and a polystyrene recycling solution.”
There are a couple of firsts amongst this year’s batch of entries. Te Ngaengae Pool and Fitness Centre appears to be the first 5 Green Star rated aquatic centre in Aotearoa. And Palmerston North has entered the first dedicated, continuous polystyrene recycling programme with a clear pathway to processing and re-use.
Last year the winner of the GHD Award, Waiaroha (Hastings District Council) went on to win the Supreme Award.
“I’m impressed by the remarkable projects and initiatives that have been submitted for this year’s GHD Award for Excellence in Environmental Leadership. We are committed to working alongside our clients to deliver lasting community benefit. The projects selected for consideration showcase the same commitment to sustainable and enduring environmental outcomes, so we’re honoured to support and celebrate the achievements of these entrants, which contribute to a more resilient future for all.” says Stephen Douglass, GHD’s Environment Market Lead.
The winner of the GHD Award, the other six category winners and the LGFA Supreme Award winner will be announced at the Taituarā Awards Dinner at Tākina in Wellington on 12 June.
This Award and the Dinner would not be possible without the sponsorship of GHD and our other sponsors. We thank them for their ongoing support.
