Contributed by Rex Capil, General Manager Community Lifestyle Services at Gore District Council. Rex recently went on an Overseas Manager Exchange to Canada thanks to collaboration with our Canadian partner organisation Local Government Management Association (LGMA) and our sponsor Marsh. Rex has prepared a report on multiple aspects of how local government operates in British Columbia.

Rex’s Overseas Manager Exchange involved hosting Ramin Seifi, a manager from the Township of Langley in 2019 when Rex was employed at Southland District Council. In turn Rex was meant to be hosted by Ramin in June 2020. The pandemic got in the way – but Rex was recently able to complete his end of the exchange three years on with Ramin hosting him for two weeks in Canada.

British Columbia is a province with a similar population to Aotearoa New Zealand. Rex visited large municipal councils such as Greater Vancouver Regional District as well as much smaller rural ones such as the Township of Langley.
