Energy, enthusiasm and camaraderie filled the Lower Hutt Events Centre as 13 teams from councils across the motu came together for this year’s Taituarā Management Challenge.

After months of preparation, the competition saw participants pushed out of their comfort zones in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment designed to test and grow their professional skills.

The Management Challenge is known for being full on and fun, and this year was no exception. Teams were presented with challenges both in the lead-up and throughout the event, requiring them to respond across a range of formats including video, presentations, written submissions and roleplays.

“It’s intense. For me, it’s about connecting and collaborating in ways you wouldn’t normally across different groups in the organisation, sharing knowledge, ideas and experiences,” said Adonica Giborees from Auckland Council.

Despite the pressure, the atmosphere in the room remained upbeat and supportive. Teams cheered each other on, celebrated each milestone, and worked side by side to bring their ideas to life.

“It’s such a collective effort, so it was really good to see the teams come together and support each other,” said Sunita Kashyap from Auckland Council.

For many participants, one of the standout aspects of the Challenge was the opportunity to connect with people they wouldn’t normally work with, both within and across councils.

“The Management Challenge has been such a cool experience to get to know other people I would have never gotten to work with. My heart is full,” said Ash Cleaver from Whakatāne. “I’d recommend it to anyone, and I wouldn’t have said that a few days ago.”

This year also saw a new addition to the competition, with a “wild card” team made up of individuals from different councils. Despite not having met in person before, they quickly formed a cohesive team, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that defines the Challenge.

Participants spoke about the personal growth they experienced throughout the competition, particularly in building confidence and resilience.

“It’s an fantastic opportunity for anyone, whether you’re in a leadership role or not to grow your skills. It’s really about self-development and growth of everyone.” Katrina Ungco from Giborne District Council said.

Christina Winitana from Palmerston North City Council added, “It pushes you to unearth the skills and strengths that you didn’t realise you had.”

After a full day of challenges, teams were exhausted but in high spirits, having given their all and formed lasting connections along the way.

With judges now finalising their scores, the winning team will be announced at the LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards® on 18 June at Tākina in Wellington. The winning team will go on to compete at the Australasian Management Challenge in Australia representing Aotearoa.
