The Democracy and Participation Reference Group (DPRG) supports excellence in local democracy by strengthening governance practice and public participation across the sector. The group brings together experienced professionals who provide leadership, advice, and collaboration to enhance how local government engages communities and upholds democratic processes.
Purpose
The DPRG exists to:
- Promote high standards of practice in democracy services and governance support.
- Support councils to meet the requirements of key legislation, including the Local Government Act, Local Electoral Act, and LGOIMA.
- Enhance public understanding of the role and value of local democracy in New Zealand’s system of governance.
- Strengthen community participation in local democratic processes.
- Work with partners to build Māori capacity and encourage Māori participation in local decision-making.
Responsibilities
Members of the DPRG:
- Identify and promote leading practice in democracy and governance support.
- Provide operational and policy advice on issues affecting democracy services.
- Collaborate with other agencies to build public understanding and engagement in local democracy.
- Support initiatives that grow participation in local elections and governance processes.
- Work with partner organisations to improve Māori engagement and participation in local government.
- Contribute to the delivery of the Taituarā work programme and sector leadership priorities.
