The Electoral Reference Group (ERG) provides guidance and expertise on local government electoral matters. The group supports councils, electoral officers, and Taituarā in upholding high standards in the planning, management, and conduct of local body elections and polls, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and Te Tiriti principles.
ERG meetings have representatives from the Ministry of Health, Department of Internal Affairs, Local Government New Zealand, the Electoral Commission, Local Government Commission, and New Zealand Post attending on a regular basis.
Purpose
The ERG exists to:
- Support councils and electoral officers in meeting the requirements of the Local Electoral Act 2001 and Local Electoral Regulations 2001.
- Promote best practice in the planning, management, and conduct of local elections and polls.
- Ensure electoral processes reflect Te Tiriti and Te Tiriti principles.
- Provide sector input on legislative change, policy development, and emerging electoral issues.
- Strengthen collaboration and knowledge sharing between local authorities and key agencies involved in electoral processes.
Responsibilities
Members of the ERG:
- Build and maintain cooperative relationships with the local government sector and other organisations with interests in electoral matters.
- Monitor the electoral environment, including proposed legislative changes and international developments.
- Prepare and present submissions representing local government perspectives to Ministers and relevant organisations.
- Provide advice, guidance, tools, and training to support electoral officers.
- Participate in national programmes to promote awareness of and participation in local elections and polls.
