In a historic moment for Aotearoa, Taupō District Council and Ngāti Tūwharetoa have further strengthened their partnership and connection by coming together in one purpose-built whare ‘He Whare Hono ō Tūwharetoa’.
This landmark three-story whare stands as a testament to collaboration, innovation, and the shared aspirations of Council, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and the Taupō community.
The project commenced in 2017, when Council had to vacate its previously owned premises, resulting in staff being temporarily relocated to various leased locations. The strong partnership and mutual respect were evident throughout this process, beginning with the desire of both partners to collaborate on a long-term solution.
After numerous consultations with the community, Council received resounding support to partner with Ngāti Tūwharetoa entities, who would ultimately construct the purpose-built whare for Council to lease over the long-term, with Ngāti Tūwharetoa entities as co-tenants.
This project was not just about bricks and mortar — it is a living expression of our connection to our whenua, taiao, cultural heritage, and shared goals for economic and social growth. It is a space where the past, present, and future intersect, honouring the wisdom of our tūpuna while paving the way for our uri whakatupu (future generations).
