Te Whare Whakatere – Re-creating the Heart of Ashburton

Re-creating the heart of Ashburton through the Te Whare Whakatere and Baring Square East project has created a new community hub housing the Ashburton District Council’s civic and administrative functions, as well as the library. The building and surrounding area are designed to foster a sense of pride, welcoming the community while honoring local heritage and culture.

Te Whare Whakatere is a modern civic space, reflecting the connection to the whenua and its mana whenua, while promoting heritage preservation, environmental sustainability, and community well-being. Collaboration with local rūnaka has been central to the project’s success, symbolizing a new beginning for the community.

The facility’s design is aesthetically appealing and environmentally responsible, featuring sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and green spaces. These initiatives not only enhance the building’s operational efficiency but also demonstrate the community’s commitment to sustainability. Te Whare Whakatere serves as a model for future projects, integrating cultural heritage with modern sustainable practices to ensure long-term benefits for future generations.
