The Auckland Level Crossing Removal Programme aims to improve safety and remove conflict points between people and trains by removing all level crossings across the Auckland rail network. Auckland Transport (AT), in collaboration with BECA, is starting with the removal of 7 pedestrian-only level crossings, including 2 connected to Homai Train Station.

Homai is home to a diverse community, including the students of the blind and low vision campus adjacent to the station. The project team used innovative tools such as virtual reality, 4D construction sequencing, and a 3D printed model to enhance design outcomes, minimize disruption, and facilitate inclusion. The 3D model provided a tactile experience for blind and low vision groups, allowing them to interact with and better understand the proposed changes.

Many people who had not previously participated in any consultation were able to do so, thanks to the team's foresight in recognizing and accommodating the diverse needs of the community. The success of the engagement is attributed to the team's innovative use of tools and their recognition of the diverse needs of the Homai community.
