Great South, Southland Regional Development Agency, has taken a leading role in guiding Southland towards a sustainable and viable future while seeking to achieve net zero emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) in accordance with commitments from the New Zealand Government. Pursuant to the aim of net zero emissions, the Carbon Neutral Advantage project, a partnership with The Tindall Foundation and the Ministry for the Environment, was established to provide Southern industries and communities with the information and tools necessary to establish a competitive advantage and create a sustainable environment for future generations. The Murihiku Southland Decarbonisation Workshop Series for business was launched in September 2020 as part of the Carbon Neutral Advantage project and focuses on empowering organisations to measure, report and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As the first regional programme of its kind, workshops have been offered to businesses, local councils and non-profit organisations. Participants in the three-day Decarbonisation Workshop Series learn their own unique carbon measurement and decarbonisation strategy and are provided access to a network of businesses also working to reduce emissions. To date, the programme has engaged 114 participants from 83 organisations.
