For many of us, our pets are our world. Their welfare is crucial, and when not with us, we like to know that they are being well cared for. South Wairarapa District Council (SWDC) believes that too.
As a territorial authority, we are required to operate a dog pound that ensures safe custody and care of impounded dogs. Our previous facility was no longer able to meet necessary requirements and notified as non-compliant. A suitable pound was required so SWDC reached beyond requirements and an innovatively designed dog pound was opened on 30 May 2023.
The result is a new, fit-for-purpose facility which took into consideration the South Wairarapa population, environmental sustainability, protection of the community and most importantly, it is a facility that exceeds basic animal welfare requirements.
