About this event
Participants will learn how to identify the key climate change related risks to their organisation and their community, how to develop realistic adaptation plans, and how to recognise the financial and legal risks as we transition to a net zero world. The training will enable participants to develop and recommend to their elected members approaches to respond to the challenges posed by climate change and to lead the organisation and community towards greater climate change resilience.
Topics include:
- Context and drivers for climate risk
- Setting up and planning an assessment
- Understanding physical and transition risk for local government
- Key steps for assessing climate risk
- Some examples
- Adaptation planning considerations.

Climate and Resilience SpecialistJames has a 20-year career in the infrastructure and environmental sectors and leads T+T’s climate change and resilience advisory practice. His career to date has also spanned work within asset management and infrastructure planning, climate change adaptation / mitigation, risk management and sustainability. James recently led the ‘Built Environment’ domain of NZ’s first National Climate Change Risk Assessment, and was part of MfE’s Climate Change Adaptation Technical Working Group during 2018. He and T+T’s climate change and resilience team are increasingly working with regional and district councils, infrastructure utilities and private companies to better understand climate risk, and advise on emissions reduction strategies. He has also been involved in a number of recent research projects - including Deep South Science Challenge research into the impacts of climate change on wastewater and stormwater systems.

Raymond re-joined Taituarā in June 2014 as Sector Improvement Manager, before commencing his current role as Chief Advisor at Taituarā. He has spent most of the last 20 years in local government related roles, most recently with the Department of Internal Affairs.
He describes his job as two-thirds providing assistance to the local government sector and one-third providing advice to central government on local government matters. His ambition is to help develop a Local Government Act that doesn’t require changes every 18 months. He asks that you wish him well with this task.
